So keep reading and I’ll let you know how you could get a free Amazon gift card worth 0.

Amazon was founded in 1994 and actually started out as an online bookstore believe it or not. If you were surfing the internet in those days you may remember this. The first book they ever sold online was Fluid Concepts and Creative Analogies: Computer Models of the Fundamental Mechanisms of Thought, by Douglas Hofstadter. Never heard of it? Me neither until I did a little research for this article. Just a little bit of useless trivia for you, if you can even remember the name of the book. I can’t and I just wrote it.

Amazon was set up and the business plan stated they didn’t expect to turn a profit for four to five years. They were able to make it through the big dot-com bubble burst, which is said to have officially happened on March 10th, 2000, and by the fourth quarter of 2001 they were able to record a profit. The profit was a mere million, which equated to 1 cent per share, on revenues of over billion. This was a big deal though because it showed the potential for business models on the internet after the bubble had burst.

They started gobbling up companies and adding them to their brand pretty much right away. They purchased IMDb (internet movie database) in 1998, Alexa internet, which is a web-traffic reporting site, in 1999. They also bought up CD Now in 2003, BookSurge in 2005, and most recently Zappos in 2009 and Woot in 2010. This just continued to bolster the value of the company as a whole and provided more potential ROI for their stockholders.

Today the Amazon product line includes not only books but CDs, DVDs, software, consumer electronics, tools, kitchen items, toys and games, apparel, jewelry, beauty products and groceries just to name a few. In 2007 Amazon created a product that would have a huge impact on not only the book market, but also had publishing companies in a tizzy. The Amazon Kindle was introduced, which is their electronic book reader where you can download books via a wireless network. This threatened to kill the middle man which was the publishing companies. And since publishing companies are some of the biggest conglomerates in the world this was quite the feat.

So no matter what it is you’re looking for I can almost guarantee Amazon will have it. They even have products, like the Microsoft Kinect, available for pre-order and the Kinect is not even due out until November. So there you have it, Amazon is your one stop shopping destination.
