Amazon’s new Kindle 2, embarrasses the first Kindle with a multitude of advancements. The newest version can turn apges quicker, has a better casing, a vastly improved web feel and 7x the memory.

I’m have always been a techno pioneer; I have recommended the BlackBerry Storm, the first iPhone, and even the VooDoo Envy. And the latest Kindle is my new love. Let me count the ways…

First off, the enhanced screen. It’s quite useful when checking out your favorite Web pages on the Kindle’s browser. From the start, Kindles have come equipped with wireless cell phone radios that make it possible, even effortless to download your books of choice from anywhere. Finally that power of the in-case radio is being utilized to the fullest, with an HTML browser capable of seeing web pages in excellent looking 16 shade grayscale. Sure, they may remind you of Web pages from 1998, as the Kindle 2 can’t render some of the latest graphics and cutting edge code that we’re used to today, but this is a reader, not a futuristic Game-boy

Next is the Kindle 2′s capability to allow you to view a wide variety of documents types. No longer are you restricted to just magazines, books, and newspapers. The original Kindle supported Microsoft Word files, which was fine. But now the latest release is capable of displaying Microsoft Word, TXT, BMP, PDF, GIF, HTML,JPEG, PNG, and even MOBI files. This gives it serious potential to act as your document repository. All you have to do is email them to your assigned email address, and they are automatically loaded via the Whispernet wireless connection to your You load them by emailing them from your computer to your Kindle’s dedicated email address, where they are wirelessly synced to your Kindle.

The keyboard is also improved, albeit not optimally. It’s new 5-way directional button beats the old Kindle’s scroll wheel by a mile. However, I’ll admit I’m not completely sold on it. Not sure what a better solution would be, but this reminds me a bit of a red eraser-type mouse that that came on some PC laptops.

Now you don’t have to pay the dime to email your work documents to your device. You can now load docs (as well as MP3s) for free. Just use the USB cable that comes with the Kindle (and also is a wall charger). This USB has a capacity of one and a half GB, and with the average electronic item weighing in at about 1MB, that equates to about 1500 ‘books’. Not bad.

Can’t hold the book because you’re cooking, or just want to get a little shut-eye but not fall asleep? Have the Kindle 2 read the novel to you. Turning text to speech has the promise of making reading more fluid than people have been exposed to. Read in the car or bus then use your headphones and listen to the book while walking. You can read the book in the hammock, and as the sun sets, continue to listen to the story as you lie there sipping your mint julep.

My daughter loves the on screen dictionary display, as it shows the definition of a word by simply hovering over it, AND the speech feature then can let her know how it’s pronounced.

Oh did I mention that Amazon originally debuted the Kindle at $360 in February, but now it’s at $299 in anticipation of the holiday season. It’s their number one seller, so I doubt it’ll get cheaper anytime soon. I paid the full $360 for mine as I couldn’t resist having the latest and greatest (I’m a sucker for high-tech immediate gratification), but I’ll be picking up one of those $299 ones for my mom as an early Christmas gift. She is going on a 4 week trip to visit her sister in Australia and those flights are real looong.

Amazon on Tuesday evening dropped the price of its cheapest Kindle 2 reading device by $40, bringing it down to $259, while offering a new Kindle with global wireless access for a $20 premium. Amazon says the combo US/International version uses GSM technology for coverage in over 100 countries, but that US customers traveling abroad will be charged an additional $1.99 fee for wirelessly downloading books or single issues of periodicals from “your Archived Items or the Kindle store while roaming internationally.”

As usual, customers can avoid these fees if they download books, periodicals, and personal documents via their computer and transfer them to the Kindle using USB.

The company’s popular e-book reader with US wireless is available immediately, while the version with both US and international wireless — available for pre-order today — is expected to ship on October 19 for $279.

In an interview, Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos said the company can now afford to reduce the price because of the increased number of Kindles the company is making — and selling.

Bezos called it Amazon’s best-selling product, but Amazon has not disclosed sales figures for the Kindle, which has a 6-inch screen that displays shades of gray, room to store 1,500 books and the ability to download books wirelessly.

The price reduction also shows Amazon is trying to maintain a lead in the nascent e-reader market as the field gets more crowded.

The second price drop in about three months — the first was in early July — comes as competitors enter the increasingly crowded e-book market, including the recent introduction of Sony’s PRS-600 Touch eReader (and its forthcoming Daily Edition Reader with 3G) along with other more affordable (but simpler) devices from companies such as iRiver, iRex and Samsung.

In addition to promises by electronics companies to cut the price of the devices in half, other larger players such as Time, Inc. and Apple are also rumored to be entering the e-book market with their own devices.

Dylan Thomas is an english teacher whose love for reading is only rivaled by his daughter’s.
If you’re considering buying a Kindle 2 this Kindle 2 review will help you (if you prefer here’s a kindle 2 VIDEO review by current users)Kindle Review – The CruxThe Kindle 2 is great if you -1. Read a lot of books OR2. Travel a lot and want to carry a Kindle 2 reader along instead of lots of books OR3. Commute daily for work and want to either read (on a train, bus, etc.) or listen to books (in your car, truck etc.) OR4. The combination of features appeals to you.If you like it, you can find out more by reading Kindle 2 reviews at Amazon. If you prefer, you can see more Kindle 2 videos and get an idea of how it looks and its features. This review will continue with pros and cons of the Kindle 2.Do keep in mind that the Kindle 2 is not such a great choice if -1. You don’t read books.2. You want a multi-purpose device. Kindle 2 is primarily an eBook Reader.3. You want a very flashy device. You might like the newer look of the Kindle 2 – however, it is not the prettiest device around.4. You want to read a lot of PDFs and want very high quality conversions.Kindle Review Pros – Reasons a Kindle 2 might be right for You.1. Free Internet Access via WhisperNet and there is now extended coverage so your Kindle 2 will have wireless access in more places.2. You can download a book over WhisperNet in 60 seconds.3. WhisperSync – read books and synchronize documents across Kindle 1, Kindle 2, and soon across other mobile devices.4. Read to Me feature. Text to Speech is very cool and should be fun5. The Kindle 2 is very slim and sleek looking at just 0.3 inches.6. One of the biggest problems with Kindle 1 was accidentally hitting the page turning buttons, and in Kindle 2 that has been fixed. The buttons are smaller and have to be pushed on the inside edge so holding the Kindle 2 cannot accidentally trigger page turns.7. You can read blogs, newspapers, and magazines on the Kindle 2.8. The eInk is easy on the eyes, and when combined with variable font sizes really makes a big difference.9. You can store up to 1500 books.10. Up to 6 Kindle 2s and Kindle 1s on one account so you can share with your family and/or close friends.11. There are loads of free kindle book sites where you can get tens of thousands of free kindle books. Amazon itself has 7,000+ free kindle edition books.12. You can save trees by reading on Kindle2.13. Great for aeroplanes and travel – Battery lasts really long; it’s tiny at 10.2 ounces and 0.3 inches; easy to read even with overhead light.14. Kindle 2 has an in-built dictionary.15. The quality of the screen has been improved.16. Buy books anytime and get them delivered instantly.17. Can read without having to hold down a book and cause damage to it. Can read with one hand, or use Read To Me feature to read without using hands.18. From Kindle 1 review, and applies -Wow – My wife is a stroke survivor, and has lost use of the left side of her body. Reading books has been impossible since she could not hold the book open and turn the pages with only one hand. Kindle has changed all of that for her, and made reading a joy again.19. Fits easily in your purse; packs easily for a trip.20. Travel with as many books as you like – just the Kindle 2′s 10.2 ounces.21. From a Kindle 1 review – High praise indeed – the best thing since amazon.com & zappos.com.22. You can send your own files to the Kindle 2.23. The USB can be used to recharge Kindle 2.24. The Kindle 1 falling out of the case problem has been fixed.

All the news that’s fit to be Kindled? N. Carlson from Silicon Alley Insider, has come up with some mathematical guesstimates and figured that The New York Times might survive the decade by actually ‘stopping the presses’.. If the Times simply issued free Kindles to every subscriber rather than print the newspaper, it could save nearly half of its operating budget.

Shocked? You shouldn’t be. Mr. Hirschorn’s piece in The Atlantic foresees the Times closing it doors this year. New York magazine also had a recent article about the “renegade cybergeeks” who could ‘save the paper’. Here’s the breakdown: According to the New York Times’ financials, production costs such as raw materials and wages/benefits total around $844 million annually. Carlson also revealed that the newsroom expenses amount to about two hundred million annually. Therefore it roughly costs $644 million to print and distribute the ‘paper’ newspaper.

Now, since the Times has some 830,000 subscribers, and Kindle e-book reader costs $359 (as of Feb this year), handing out a free Kindle to every subscriber would cost only cost, say $298 million. If the Times would ‘stop the presses’, and not distribute any papers, and have all its subscribers read the paper via the Kindle, it could theoretically save $346 million.

However Silicon Alley has missed a point or two. Not all readers of the paper are subscribers. So only some of that grand total of $844 million would go towards supplying the paper for them. If the Times went completely paper-free, it stands to lose some of the customers that stop at the neighborhood paper stand to get their copy.

Naturally going all electronic delivery would encourage some customers to get their free Kindle so they could continue to read the paper, but not all of them. Some customers would be lost. The decision of going to an all electronic delivery would have many ‘green’ points that can be used to sell the idea to the public as well. No more producing ink, killing trees, powering the physical presses, nor the burning of gas for the delivery trucks. This could very well position the Times as a ‘green’ and community conscious company.

Personally , I would miss the paper newspapers. There’s a nostalgic feeling I get turning and folding the pages, and smelling the print on the paper. Though, one thing I won’t miss is having to wash the print off my hands after reading the Times. “I don’t know if the newspaper is dead, but I will say, “Long Live the Enewspaper.”

Besides the good looks, the new generation Kindle is also flush with supreme functional features. The ergonomics is superb too, having been ironed out of whatever shortcomings the original version endured. This technological marvel has now been packaged into a thing of beauty and functionality with accident-proof buttons, smooth rocker controls, standard keyboard and stylish overall layout.Although the Kindle is likely to attract quite a bit of attention, that’s not the intention of the design upon the reader. The objective was in fact to get the reader ‘lost in your reading, not the technology’. It has so gallantly replicated the feature of a good physical book to disappear while you’re reading it but can’t put it down except it’s now can’t put the Kindle down. The most distinguishing quality of the Kindle eBook Reader is the Whispernet. It’s a wireless service for getting content and internet access. The Whispersync feature links other Kindle e-readers and its related devices like the iPhones and iPods. When you purchase the Kindle 2, Amazon will foot the bill for the connectivity of your particular e-reader. Most Kindle review sites will not fail to mention 2 things: the price and the size of the library. At a cost of the better part of $ 400, it could be steep for some but if you’re into reading, the 275,000 books available will beckon at a discounted price. Whether it’s worth the money or not is an individual thing and if Amazon has its way, any book that’s ever printed will have an e-version for the Kindle in future. That’s a lot of books! There’s nothing like the Kindle Wireless Reading Device. You get wireless connectivity, shopping and instant 24/7 delivery all at one stop when you know Where To Buy Kindle 2.

Cheapest Kindle on the Planet?

You want the cheapest Kindle? You Can’t Handle the Cheapest Kindle! Well, I can’t. But in case you are one of the idle ones that has plenty of time to invest in the possibility of saving a few bucks, here are the options I can offer…

1. Wait for the Kindle 3, and then shop for a used Kindle on ebay, etc. Of course this is not an option if you’re shopping for a Christmas present. At least a 2009 Christmas gift.

2. Steal one. Unlike Abbie Hoffman’s strategy for getting your hands on his book, I wouldn’t recommend the same.

3. Bid on a ‘like new’ Kindle 2 on ebay. Bid $1 in anticipation of getting that deal of a lifetime, and agonizing watch the bidding catch on fire as the holidays approach.

4. Give up on any hopes of getting a great deal at an auction during the holidays and go back to step 1.

Or save your time and sanity and just buy the dang thing from Amazon.com.Amazon is the only source for new Kindles and AFAIK they only have one price — no special promotions or anything. However, the Kindle debuted at $399, was dropped to $349, and now is at $299 with free shopping.

So, there you go, the cheapest Kindle 2 on the planet, complete with your free Whispernet wireless subscription. Courtesy of Amazon.

BTW despite my solid advice above, I couldn’t resist clicking a link “WHERE TO PURCHASE KINDLE 2.0 E-READER AT THE LOWEST PRICE”. My only reward was some youtube video message, “This video has been removed due to terms of use violation.”

Serves me right.

1. Travel, travel, travel. When traveling, Kindle is your best friend. Every trip I always plan and fully expect to read AND finish Herman Melville’s Moby Dick, Victor Hugo’s The Hunchback of Notre Dame, and Steven King’s The Stand. With the Kindle in my backpack, I’ve actually accomplished all three this summer! You literally can have 350,000 books at your fingertips.2. Its not just about books either. Do you have professional document you need to review on that flight? Email it to your Kindle. Do you have technical or training you have to tackle? Email it to your Kindle. If you have a soft copy of a body of text (including word docs, Adobe pdf files, or plain email type text files), you can simply email it to your Kindle, and it can serve as your electronic briefcase. 3. Its appearance is hi-tech. This new Kindle is sooo much thinner and streamline, its thinner than my IPhone. 4. The touch is just right. You know how some keyboards have just that right touch and feel? That is how my Kindle is. Not clunky, nor ambiguous. And the buttons are laid out as if someone at Amazon actually designed it with humans in mind.5. IF you own a Kindle you can download for free a Kindle reader and not have to buy the book twice. Using the patented Whispernet technology you can ‘mark’ where you left off when reading a book on your Kindle, then pick right up at that point on your IPhone. And vice versa. An electronic bookmark that coordinates between both devices.6. Wet environments are no problem. This was a pleasant surprise, that I found out by accident. On a recent vacation, I took it out to the pool. My wife warned that the kids were sure to splash my new toy into oblivion. Ha! I got through five Kurt Vonnegut short stories without a hiccup. I might add next to us were two women reading, and their paperback romance novels were damp and ‘wavy’ shall we say?7. I love to highlight what I read, especially any self help (and I sure need them) books. This feature is perfect and even has feedback when you take a note.8. The dictionary is now a built-in feature and has instant lookup, without having to go to a separate page for the definition. Just move your cursor to the word that you want defined and it appears on screen. I can’t tell you how ‘smart’ that makes me!9. The illustrations now come in sixteen shades of grey which is infinitesimally better than the previous four!10. This is the future. You may not want to hear it. Just as video killed the radio star, electronic books will not obsolete paper but the improvement can’t be ignored. Amazon hit a home run with the electronic book and they will have a corner on this market for some time to come.11. (Bonus) Did I mention the Kindle 2 is now on sale?

From students to retirees, including celebrities like Dr. Oz, it has established itself as a favorite gadget of many. It looks good when it’s not in use and great when it is. One of its less celebrated but most dauntless traits is the excellent display. The images and text are so easy on the eyes. The Kindle will ‘kindle’ reading in people.

No doubt, the clearest Kindle claim to fame is its superior technology. The Kindle 2 has smoothed out the rough edges of the original Kindle and existing strengths have been improved. The display is a perfect example. The images and text on the electronic ‘paper’ screen views even sharper and crisper than a tree killing, paper book. If you are still spending hard earned cash on traditional books that are causing fatigue and eyestrain, stop. Buy yourself Kindle instead.

At the center of the Kindle display is its EIDD, or Electronic Ink Digital Display technology. It is responsible for one being able to enjoy countless hours of reading free of eye strain. The screen does not warm up as there is no backlight involved. Therefore, the display is positively non-glaring. The reader has their choice of six font sizes, making it possible to just about view everything in a large print if needed. This is a tremendous advantage for those who are dependent on reading glasses.

The Kindle 2’s appearance is vastly improved as well. The original Kindle was quite a bit thicker and a bit ‘clunky’. The new and improved look and feel is conservative yet stylish. The screen is appropriately located with emphasis on ergonomics and functionality rather than looks therefore utilizing the belief that you should be ‘lost in your reading, not in the technology’.

Magazines, Ebooks, and newspapers are easily available online at Amazon itself, and naturally this is also where to buy Kindle. If you are an avid reader, you might as well do it comfortably and in style. The agreeable display and what it does for the long term health of your eyes deserve more credit than it’s given. Take a little time to investigate the Kindle electronic reader and your eyes will thank you.

Letterman’s 10 Best Reasons to Buy a Kindle (or should be)

You literally can have 350,000 books at your fingertips.

And the buttons are laid out as if someone at Amazon actually designed it with humans in mind.

5.  IF you own a Kindle you can download for free a Kindle reader and not have to buy the book twice. Using the patented Whispernet technology you can ‘mark’ where you left off when reading a book on your Kindle, then pick right up at that point on your IPhone.  And vice versa. An electronic bookmark that coordinates between both devices.

6. I might add next to us were two women reading, and their paperback romance novels were damp and ’wavy’ shall we say?

7. I love to highlight what I read, especially any self help (and I sure need them) books. This feature is perfect and even has feedback when you take a note.

8. The dictionary is now a built-in feature and has instant lookup, without having to go to a separate page for the definition. Just move your cursor to the word that you want defined and it appears on screen. I can’t tell you how ‘smart’ that makes me!

9. The illustrations now come in sixteen shades of grey which is infinitesimally better than the previous four!

10. This is the future. You may not want to hear it.  Just as video killed the radio star, electronic books will not obsolete paper but the improvement can’t be ignored. Amazon hit a home run with their Kindle electronic book and they will have a corner on this market for some time to come.

Many are asking where to buy Kindle 2 as Christmas approaches. Truly Kindle is an amazing gift for oneself, friends, family, loved ones – for any occasion. The ebook reader’s sweet features, slick design and ease of use make this a best buy Kindle and a must have for this Year of the Ox. Kindle 2 is now slimmer and more reminiscent a real book than prior versions. For the avid readers this reading device makes it a delight. Don’t let the size of it fool you! The Kindle is just over 1/3 inch and 10.2 ounces. The slim and consolidated design allows simplicity of storage in a bag, purse, brief case or backpack. This Kindle reader goes where any paperback book travels without the massiveness. This superb electronic book reader comes in a assortment of various configurations. Kindle 2 is something out of the average. The well contrived design of the Kindle has many benefits. The high resolution screen called “electronic paper” astonishingly resembles looking at an real newspaper or paper book. The text size can be easily conformed for exhausted eyes and there is almost no screen glower to struggle with. Up to 1,500 Kindle books can be laid in on the Amazon Kindle 2 which is a heavy load of books. For the bulk of folks, this is an full lifetime of scanning. It can store over two hundred Kindle books direct from the factory and with a low investment of a digital media card (2 MB) this amount could double up. There are currently over 230,000 procurable downloads as of the date of this article. You can try the ebook for free prior to purchase. You have the full array of Amazon titles to choose from as well as the choice to download from alternative sites. What a bonus! I love the fact that the Kindle is crowded with the latest technology of a laptop; however, one third its’ size. It functions, seeks and downloads wireless over a 3G network (similar to the network used for cell phones). Thus getting rid of the unwieldy USB cords and mad searches to detect a WIFI hot spot. The real stunner is that there are no monthly bills or costs involved for the wireless features. A storage answer is supplied by Amazon for regular and consistent readers. Those that read a lot purchase many books as they wouldn’t know where to place them all. Kindle 2 solves the related problem – the want of storage place by being able to back them up on Amazon and well access them via wireless technology. Because of the computer backup service the possibility of book ownership is infinite. Invest in a Kindle and you can browse, research, shop, read and download items in essentially any location that has cellular phone service! You can lookup WIKIs (basically like an encyclopedia internet site), read blogs, utilize the inbuilt dictionary, purview Microsoft documents, download books, magazines, newsprints and audio books while on travel. I’ve observed that the Kindle performs surprisingly well in direct sun light while you catch rays by the pond. The Kindle can be controlled in one hand and the QWERTY keyboard allows for for rapid typing for both right and left handed users. The well thought out ergonomic buttons and finger scrolling abilities make page screening quick and easy. The battery can be fully charged in two hours and should supply four to six hours of constant use.
