Numerous attempts were being made all along with the sole intention of making our reading that much more smooth and fast. That they all came to a naught is a different story altogether. The breakthrough was finally provided by the online book retailer Amazon when they came up with the Kindle electronic reader – an extraordinary piece of equipment that is just as novel as is the method of acquiring the content itself.

The Amazon Kindle takes user friendliness and portability to a completely new level. It might be hard to believe but the Kindle with its compact dimension is capable of downloading blogs, books, newspapers, and magazines on its own without requiring to get hooked up to a PC. This means you are connected at all times to your bookshop by means of a wireless network. This while having your entire library of books already loaded on the e-reader memory. The Kindle DX is equipped with an usable memory of 3.3GB that can store no less than 3500 of your e-books.

Not only are Kindle e-readers smart enough to be able to connect to the internet on their own, but syncing can be brought about automatically. The e-reader is endowed with internet capability by way of 3G technology on which is rendered the Amazon Whispernet service. This feature comes bundled with the e-reader when you purchase the device, so you won’t have to be bothered of such things like wireless service plan, contract, or bills later on.

Coming to the Amazon Whispernet wireless service, it surely is a one-of-a-kind service that allows users to have any e-book delivered to your e-reader in less than a minute. This service is at present confined to only within the US but it is just a matter of time when it becomes widely available. Right now, this service allows users in the United States to download and have an idea of the book before deciding whether to purchase the book or not, all of this without having to spend any money at all. You can have more details on this along with a lot more from electronic reader blog that has the latest on such things.

These electronic readers are designed to be just as impressive with their looks as it would with their performance. Their crisp black-and-white screen appears exactly like a fine-grade printed paper while the virtual ink used is a technological masterpiece, which looks exactly as real ink on paper would look as far as readability and appearance is concerned. In fact, so real life it is that there is no backlighting, which means reading even in bright sunlight is just as effortless as anywhere else. Also the screen never gets heated up. So even prolonged use of these e-readers won’t hurt your eyes. It is this that can well be termed the biggest USP of the e-readers and if you wish to know more on this, just long on to ereader forum .

Also, Whispernet utilizes Amazon’s optimized technology along with Sprint’s national high-speed (EVDO) data network so that users are able to search and download content wirelessly, or simply browse the internet and sync different devices from anywhere anytime. If you think the maiden Kindle portable reader rocks then the new improved Kindle 2 definitely deserves a closer look. You won’t come back disappointed.

It has been a common knowledge that books have bewildered the world of their contents, appeals and processes from authorship to readership. At the advent of computer and internet streamlining every household in highly developed countries, agreeing with the note of Sven Birkerts that the old assumptions of writing and reading are under siege, affecting the grass-root level consumers up to the print or online stalwart producers is a concern to look into with explicit, subtle and uncertain expectations. Indeed, books have nourished the halls and citadels of learning institutions from time immemorial. Since books are primarily crafted for reading, reading books and producing them have continually evolved. Initially, traditional typography reading has flourished starting with Gutenberg’s invention of the printing press. In addition, with myriad of innovation brought by technological development in advanced and poor countries alike, perusing religious to science books and to anything-under-the-sun tomes and other prints created small shelves to huge libraries of information in the world. Furthermore, books of this time have been with people. Books of different sizes, contents, and print forms have been muscled, dirtied, marked, and savored by the fingers, pens, hands, and eyes of students, teachers, and those who are engrossed by profession and leisure. Not to mention, books have also eaten all sort of bookmarks and varied memorabilia from flower of suitors, feathers, leaves, postcards and the likes from generation to generation. Although using them could mean withering them out, this would immensely remind the readers the proof of their acts etched by the wrinkles they have worn by turning their pages from cover to cover. Could this conventional ways embedded in people (writer, publisher, and reader) be changed by time and more advancement that is highly sophisticated? The new reading model has come to answer. Amazon’s Jeff Bezos strongly considers that one of humankind’s most divine creations, the book, can be improved thus opening a new reading era. With technology at reach as initiated by telecom firms, digitalizations of analog books or tomes have already begun. Digitalization of books brought the e-book specifically what Bezos endorses, the Kindle. Kindle and its kin like the Sony Reader, Guitar Hero, Blackberry and the likes epitomize into action the new reading model. What does the latest gadgetry has to offer compare to the traditional model, typical tomes or book? Bezos’ enumeration as Steven Levy reported cites some of its advantages, which are as follows:• Projects an aura of bookishness (Although it’s battery power; it does not run hot compared to other electronic device.);• Uses E Ink (breakthrough technology that copies the clarity of a printed book);• Displays educational images to soothe the anxieties of avid print-culture;• Allows versatility, allowing the user to change the font size for the elders’ consumption;• Stores shelves or bulwark collection of virtual library stack in a high capacity;• Offers searchability allowing easy access to book or data desired;• Connects to internet via system called “Whispernet” creating net service;• Downloads, browses, and personalizes books on-line independent of a computer;• Subscribes to virtual publication linked to kindle with least cost; • Jots down or make notes using a highlighted pen; and, • Ventures out as a web itself capable of interacting web search engines, blogs, and other web pages and can offer file or document sharing. With this features, Amazon calls it an iPod of reading. However, not all writers and publishers are happy about this latest technology considering that it is quite pricey at $399 (as of November 2007). In comparison to the conventional or paper books, Ann Proulx, fictional writer, commented that nobody is going to sit down and read a novel on a twitchy little screen.Likewise, in Terje Hillesund’s paper entitled Reading Book in the Digital Age subsequent to Amazon, Google and the Long Tail, Robert Darnton said that written and printed books have an “extraordinary staying power” over its digital counterpart. “Ever since the invention of the codex in the third or fourth century AD, it has proven to be a marvelous machine — great for packaging information, convenient to thumb through, comfortable to curl up with, superb for storage, and remarkably resistant to damage. It does not need to be upgraded or downloaded, accessed or booted, plugged into circuits or extracted from webs. Its design makes it a delight to the eye. Its shape makes it a pleasure to hold in the hand. And its handiness has made it the basic tool of learning for thousands of years …”Amidst strong calls to protection against the perceived death of books (traditional) over e-books (new reading), Steven Levy on his article (Future of Reading) is still optimistic of the possibilities the new bred of book may offer by reiterating the points (noted by experts) and where it may lead to, such as: • Duplication the features of the physical book;• Content or words appreciation not merely the physical aspect of books;• Interaction of readers and writers creating a community or e-book club;• Deduction of cost or price of downloadable books compared to books printed but not compromising author’s loyalty share;• Amplification of readership compared to less people reading the tomes;• Conglomeration of data leading to open source of world’s information providing reliable resources;• Protection of intellectual and property rights against illegal acts on prints so as on online penetration;• Corrections and updates of contents incase unavoidable errors;• Participation of readers in writing of the authors for improvement and feedbacks;• Serialization of notable works;• Digitalization of entire libraries; and, • Creation of new trends in reading, writing, publishing, and evaluating processes and industry of e-book.People of all generations may conform to the common belief that change is inevitable. At the end of the day, people would agree that the energy-wasting and resource-draining process of making paper just to produce conventional books would not be realistic with in the 50 years as Bill Hill noted. By then e-books may find its rightful place over its predecessors (other digital or print) or it may even have its new brand, but for sure it is not going to be Kindle’s future version alone.Although baffled by these concerns and challenges, if e-book becomes successful in the market reaching the north and south of the globe, it will surely revolutionized the way people think of reading leading to new literacy. Consequently, new literacy can mean new approach in education. What will education frontrunners, teachers be confronting?Ilana Snyder provides closer outlook by expressing his views on Packaging literacy, New Technologies and Enhanced Learning. If schools are to prepare students for a rapidly changing world, in which technology-mediated literacy practices are integral, then more is needed than reductive notions of literacy and market-driven `technologisation’ of the curriculum, accompanied by evidence-free promises of better learning. The effort considers the possibilities for critical digital literacy education. Different faces of literacy will be emerging. As this thing surfaces, teachers should be the first to be mediated or trained. A critical digital literate teacher is probably a teacher who could not only maximize the use of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) media to provide learning environment but could also streamline new trends at the classroom and off-classroom (real life) level. To name a few challenges, which teachers are up against, is to look into the product, process, and output framework leading to some issues that could be difficult to respond with by the teachers, school, and the state, such as:• Provision of this new technological devise or equipment for literacy• Sustainability and management of resources in e-learning or digital education• Training for heads, teachers, and students• Teachers and students’ access to the media• Teachers’ adaptation to technological change• Monitoring and evaluation of the new program• Improvement and ReportingAbove all these, the foremost concern in this new literacy brought by the new technology is the teachers’ attitude with regard to it. Teachers’ culture varies in some places. How much more for schools, which have not been reached yet by computers? References and Readings:”The Future of Reading.” Steven Levy.
The world around us is diving into electronics from every aspect. Even books are turning into electronics which make them a great environmental initiative as we save on trees. There are a few companies who make electronics to view ebooks and each of them have something different to offer, making the choice up to you.Ebooks are books that have been turned into electronic books for sale on the internet or they were always in electronic form. You can download many ebooks right off the internet and onto your reading device. People love reading devices because there is no more need for bulky book travel as you can store hundreds of books right on your mini reading system. It is handy and function able for many to use. There are two companies competing to create the ideal reading system. The first one is called the Kindle Wireless Reading Device. It has a six inch display and is global wireless. It is a 3G which means that you will have no monthly fees, contract or the need to look for wireless internet access. The screen and words read just like a book with no glare. This system can also read aloud to you, it can read blogs, newspapers and books. It is as thin as a magazine and lighter than a paperback, which makes it a great size for travel and use. It has a battery life of about a week, which is an improvement from its previous model. The Sony Reader Touch Edition and the Reader Pocket Edition are two new reading systems of the Sony empire. They look trendy and come in many colors. The pocket edition is very small and it can actually fit into your pocket! It has a two week battery life, perfect for a road trip or vacation on a beach. You can access Oxford`s dictionary to check words. You can take notes with a pen right on the device, change the font sizes to what you like, and there are new slots for memory sticks, the PRO Duo and a SD card. The ink also looks just like a book with no glare thanks to new technology. Both systems also feature the ability to translate into the French language. The reading devices come with accessories that can go with each one for additional fees. Both of these reading devices offer something to the avid reader. The Kindle offers 3G service that means you can download a book anytime and anywhere, the only down side is that it is a bit big and has a shorter battery life then the Sony. The Sony however as some extra features such as the note taking and dictionary and looks amazing with its small size and has a long battery life, but does not support the 3G technology as Kindle does.So if you`re comfortable downloading books at home and transferring them over to Sony`s Reader series then one of those devices might be just perfect for you, and if you want to get books at anytime and point then you might find the Kindle is right.Whichever system you choose, you will find that reading ebooks is a great new idea and concept that allow us to read as we want to; without destroying paper and without carrying around heavy books.

Just a few years ago, people were touting e-books as the future of the publishing industry. Through these portable electronic devices, individuals could read entire books without amassing a large collection of tattered paperbacks. Despite all the hoopla, e-books never really took off. Now, one company is hoping to take the technology to the next level. Just this past month, Discovery Communications (the company behind the Discovery Channel and TLC) was awarded a US patent for a new e-book invention. Though Discovery has been mum on the details, the patent application describes the device as “a new way to distribute books and other textual information to bookstores, libraries and consumers”. The patent is not just for the book-shaped electronic reader itself, but also for an entire electronic library system. Discovery notes in the patent information: ‘‘Not since the introduction of Gutenberg’s movable typeset printing has the world stood on the brink of such a revolution in the distribution of text material. The definition of the word ‘book’ will change drastically in the near future.” The news of Discovery’s patent certainly perked the ears of Amazon, the maker of the Kindle, a portable electronic device that enables users to get book, magazine and newspaper content instantly. The device was released this past fall after three years in development, and it features a display that resembles real paper. It also offers a large selection of books, giving users access to about 80 percent of current New York Times bestsellers (which cost $9.99 each to download). A keyboard allows users to make notes, highlight text and bookmark pages. Of course, the downside of the Kindle is its price tag of $399 – not exactly attractive to readers used to buying books for around $10 or borrowing them from the library. The other major obstacle faced by e-books is the question of whether people really want to let go of books. So far, the question remains unanswered. While e-books haven’t thus far lit the industry on fire, they have seen their sales figures increase exponentially in the past few years. But books still have several benefits e-books haven’t been able to match. For one thing, they’re durable. A paperback can get buried in the sand and simply be brushed off, while a $400 electronic device filled with sand could be catastrophic. Secondly, books remain a reflection of personality. Personal libraries remind people of books they’ve read and may want to return to – just like record or movie collections. Still, e-books do offer intriguing possibilities all their own. For one thing, they give people the ability to get new books in minutes while lying in bed or riding the bus. Secondly, they save space and paper. For the frequent traveler the e-book is much more convenient than lugging around a dozen paperbacks or stopping at each airport book store to add another couple pounds to a carry-on. With e-books, content is instant, bulk is minimal and travel is easy. Ultimately, the widespread acceptance of e-books comes down to whether the benefits of the new technology will outweigh the old. Certainly, e-books must become more affordable and the content available must become limitless. But perhaps Discovery will be the company to make that happen.

The advantages of having a e-book reader are pretty cut and dry. Let’s face it carrying around a lot of books can get very heavy, and storing them can take a lot of space. You can get around this by getting an e-reader. By using this device you can store hundreds of books in something that is lighter than a paperback and as thing as most magazines. Should your reader get full you can store some of the books on your computer until you need them.
The best thing about having an e-reader is that you can take it (and all the books stored in it) where ever you go. You will be able to easily read while stuck waiting in a line or in a waiting room, or on the train, bus or plane. Should you finish your book most have a wireless connection that will allow you to download new e-books almost instantaneously, without requiring you to have any sort of membership. You can search through the book easily without flipping pages should you need to find a specific bit of info, and you can change the font size so that read the print easier, which is nice for those who would otherwise have to look for a large print edition of a book.
An e-reader can really make life easier. Once you have one of these devices, you can have loads of books at your fingertips where ever you go. Best of all, the e-reader that holds all of these e-books is lighter than most paperbacks, and as thin as a typical magazine. They have been upgrading them since the first ones that came out, and now they have made it even more like the experience of reading a book by getting rid of the glare and using multiple shades of gray so the print looks like that of a regular book. They also have a long battery life so you don’t have to be continually charging them or worrying that you are going to run out of juice in the middle of your story.
You don’t have to worry about running out of books with these readers either, since you can download e-books anytime with the wireless connection that comes with the reader. Many books can be gotten for free, and others are available for a small fee, usually less than the cost to actually purchase a copy of the book itself. Let’s not forget all the magazine subscriptions and newspaper articles available at your fingertips. Think about sitting at your favorite coffee shop and having the choices of say world news, sports articles, even just a good book. It is much easier to pack one of these for trips than to try to pack a few books. Not to mention how much lighter your bags will be. We all appreciate a nice book library in our home, myself included. I take mine to the beach here in Florida. When time permits it’s a convenience and a advantage I use to the fullest. The advantages of an e-book reader are clear in today’s world of technology it’s a must have. JR

Editor’s Update Oct. 2009: This Amazon Kindle review was done when the device first hit the market. Since its release, it has been replaced with the “Amazon Kindle 2.” As of October 2009, the Kindle 2 was reduced in price to $259. In addition, there is now an international Kindle version for users outside of the U.S.

The Amazon Kindle is not only the hottest ebook reader on the market today but next to the iPhone its one of the most popular electronic gadgets. At the time of this writing it has been out of stock for weeks and those that have placed orders for the Kindle will be waiting for several more weeks to get it!

While the Kindle is certainly the market leader for the ebook reader market, Apple is fast on its heels with the iPhone. From listening to music or watching your favorite movies to playing games, you can do it with the iPhone so why not read books on the device as well? That’s what Apple seems to think anyway and as a result is quickly trying to give the Kindle a run for its money as an ebook reader.

Recently, it was announced that several major publishers have signed deals with ScrollMotion, a New York mobile application developer. ScrollMotion is a new app for the iPhone and iPod Touch that will allow consumers to buy and read electronic versions of newly released and best-selling books. This latest iPhone app puts Apple directly in the ebook business in a big way.

Despite Apple’s ambitions, there are two main differences that should favor the Kindle (at least for now) as strictly an ebook reader. The first obvious difference is the size of the display. Try reading a chapter of your favorite book on a 3.5 inch display, the size of the display on the iPhone, and you’ll likely go crazy. Contrast that to the Kindle’s six inch diagonal display and there’s no comparison in reading comfort.

The other main difference between these devices is the technology that is used in the displays themselves. The Kindle uses e-Ink technology to display text while the iPhone works much like a computer monitor where light is emitted to display text. The difference in these technologies is dramatic. When you read text on the Kindle, it looks just like text on paper and there is virtually no eye strain, even after long reading sessions. With the iPhone, reading text is much like reading from your computer monitor (on a much smaller scale) and will almost certainly strain your eyes.

When you compare these devices side-by-side as strictly ebook readers, the larger display and display technology easily favors the Amazon Kindle. There are two things in Apple’s favor, however, that could trump the Kindle’s success. The first being iPhone’s availability and price, and the second being the convenience of being able to do everything with one small device. The iPhone is readily available and is cheaper than the Kindle. As for screen size and potential eye strain, consumers may be willing to make these sacrifices if it means they can use one device for everything.

The ideal gadget would have the features of the iPhone and the Kindle, but that’s never going to happen anytime soon. I believe in the end dedicated ebook readers like the Kindle will always have a leg up on smaller communication and entertainment devices like the iPhone. That doesn’t mean Apple is out of the game. Who knows, could the Apple “iReader” be right around the corner?

When comparing the Kindle vs. iPhone as an ebook reader, it’s important that you determine exactly what your needs are in a reading device. It’s also important you know what the Kindle can and cannot do.

On This Monday, February 9, 2009, Amazon announced the Kindle 2 – new wireless reading device (latest generation) , which will be available for purchase starting on February 24, 2009 on all online shops for $359, without the speculated price increase. There may be a variety of reasons that you want to get a new kindle 2 device. For example, I never thought I’d use an e-book reader, but after buying the Kindle I became an instant convert. It has saved me many a boring hour stuck in airports, doctor’s offices, or during business flights. Most hardcover bestsellers or books for business now cost about $30. I can buy the same book for $9 on the Kindle. So the my Kindle now is holding about 100 books.I love my kindle 1 reading e-book device. Quick, smooth, easy to read, and I don’t complain about the large buttons. But I’ve been waiting for Kindle 2 device. So, I ordered yesterday the my Kindle 2. I received an email saying my order had been upgraded to a Kindle 2 and that I would be in the first group to receive Kindle 2, and would receive mine as soon as Kindle 2 becomes available later this month.Amazon announced the second latest generation Kindle e-book reader will be thinner than an iPhone at thick 0.36 inches. There’s seven times more storage then the Kindle 1 first generation device packed inside, and now holds over 1,500 books. It has a new sharper 16-level e-ink display that turns pages some 20 percent faster, provides even crisper images and clearer text for an improved book-like reading experience. There’s also a new Read-to-Me Text-to-Speech feature and a 25 percent longer battery life, along with a new five-way joystick controller that makes navigation simpler and faster. Kindle 2 comes with the New Oxford American Dictionary and its 250,000 word definitions built-in, and with Kindle 2 definitions appear instantly at the bottom of the page. Amazon also announced that the Kindle Store has now over 230,000 ebooks, plus U.S. and international newspapers, magazines available. Finally, If you do a lot of traveling, or if you are like me and hate having paper books everywhere. So, this is a great innovative device for you and for all readers all around the USA. I’ll bet you must love to have one NOW! Kindle 2 or new Amazon wireless reading device (latest generation) is available today for pre-order.
