I’m not what you’d call the most “tech savvy” person, but when my husband recommended the Kindle to me, I couldn’t resist. I bought one just a few days after it came out, and fell in love with it. I was especially captivated though by the eBook reading capabilities of the Kindle. I believed that with my new Kindle, I would never have to read a real paper book again. Then I discovered how much it would cost me for each and every book from the Amazon. My high hopes of having an entire library of books on my Kindle crumbled.

How to Make Money by Publishing eBooks for the iPhone

The success of eBooks has been an on and off thing for the last decade. Different readers and formats come and go, with Amazon’s Kindle system looking like it might have some staying power with over 225 thousand titles listed as of May 2009.

Now you can add the iPhone and its buddy the iPod Touch as viable competitors to the Kindle for publishing eBooks. The iPhone has many eBooks available free and for purchase from the iTunes App Store but in addition there is the new Kindle app for the iPhone and iPod Touch which gives readers access to the whole Kindle library without needing to have the Kindle reader.

For aspiring writers and authors who are already published, getting your eBooks listed for sale with Amazon and Kindle is a great way to start. Your eBook can be uploaded and listed without much time and cost, and Amazon will pay you a royalty of 35% on each eBook sold for Kindle. The drawback? There are definite advantages for publishing your eBook with Amazon for the Kindle and there are also advantages for publishing your eBook for the iPhone and iPod Touch using a custom iPhone app. Authors who are looking to monetize their publications should seriously consider making use of both the Kindle and iPhone publishing platforms.

Electronic book readers are nothing new.  Amazon’s Kindle reader is no exception.

The Amazon Kindle – a software and hardware platform that allows users to download and read electronic books – was first released in November 2007.  Whether the reader was before its time or the amount of downloadable books weren’t robust enough, the Kindle craze didn’t catch on until late 2009.

In 2009, Amazon introduced the “Kindle for iPhone” application, getting millions of iPhone users hooked on the idea of being able to read whatever they want whenever they want.  Suddenly an explosion was seen in the development and re-development of ebook readers from Sony and even Barnes and Noble.

Literary purists generally look down on ebook readers for being impersonal and somewhat “cold”.  They feel that the art and legacy of printed books will be lost to a generation of tech-savvy readers and eventually, authors will begin making their books available online in lieu of selling through a publisher.  But I am not so sure that ebook readers mean the death of traditional printed work, and here’s why.

Printed Books Allow for More Personal Time.

In fact, researchers at Temple University and the Institute of Chicago have found that parents and pre-school children share a more positive experience when reading traditional books together rather than ebooks.  Traditional, printed books allow for a faster development in literacy skills and reading comprehension.  Also, those who read traditional books generally take a more active role in reading, whereas those who read ebooks let the book guide them instead of using their own imagination.

Traditional Books Give a More Personal Experience.

Ever tried taking notes on an ebook reader?  Impossible.  For the reading enthusiasts out there who never finish a book without a few margin-notes or underlines or highlighting, the ebook will simply never work.  If you read an interesting point or want to remember something for later, you must use a system of electronic methods to get this done.  It’s so much easier to just jot down a note in the margin than rely on another electronic method to keep notes.

Audio Books Didn’t Kill the Traditional Book.

When audio books first rose to popularity, the literary community and those who loves books were up in arms.  They were convinced that people would rely on their daily commutes to “read” their favorite books.  They thought the publishing and book selling industry would crash and books would be relegated to something as boorish as being recorded on a cassette tape.  That clearly didn’t happen.  Audio books simply could not provide the personal touch that traditional printed books do.

There are Two Distinct Markets for eBooks and Traditional Books.

This is probably the most obvious point.  Those looking to use ebooks are using them very differently than traditional books.  Perhaps you can’t decide between which titles you want with you on an airplane; use an ebook reader, you can take a bunch and not crowd your carry-on luggage.  But if you are looking to ease into a book with a cup of tea and a warm fire, you probably won’t lunge for the ebook.  Ebooks will inevitably continue to rise in popularity, but they will never replace traditional books, they will just augment their use.

Amazon has outdone itself again. Just within days of launching the Kindle 2, Amazon also released its new Kindle iPhone app and sent iPhone users scrambling to download the free app and trying it out. The verdict? iPhone owners have been impressed enough that many of them have jumped on the Kindle bandwagon and have purchased one themselves.How exactly does this Kindle iPhone app work? For starters, it’s like having an extension of your Kindle with you wherever you go. If you’re one of those who think that reading the Kindle even while waiting in lines or taking subway rides is a bit overdoing it, then the iPhone app is the answer to your reading dilemma. Take the iPhone with you anywhere and take advantage of short bursts of reading your Kindle books whenever you have some free time.Applicable for both the iPhone and iPod touch, the Kindle for iPhone app has even taken the effort to make reading from the iPhone a pleasant experience. Given that the iPhone is a compact device, the readability is still great with 5 font sizes to choose from. Plus, going through pages is easily done with just a mere swipe of the screen right to left, or back. For bookmarking pages, finding the table of contents, going to the beginning or a specific location, and looking at the image cover, a couple of taps is all it takes as well.Accessing all your Kindle books even without the Kindle around is also possible with the Kindle iPhone app. Just log-in to your Amazon account and download any of your books stored there straight to your iPhone. Even better, you can continue to read right where you left off from either device, thanks to Kindle’s Whispersync technology. Make sure to sync your Amazon Kindle or iPhone before leaving and either one of them will automatically go to the last page read when you resume reading. Another great thing about the Kindle iPhone app is that it gives the reader a full-color version of the images from its LCD screen, as opposed to the Kindle’s shades of gray. What it cannot do however, is permanently replace the Kindle as the choice reading device. While the iPhone acts as a perfect foil to the Kindle, the latter’s e-paper technology, wide screen, and superior readability is still the best device for hours of nonstop reading. However exciting the new Kindle for iPhone may be, it still has a few downsides. First, buying books from Amazon or even just browsing available titles directly through the app is not yet possible. Moreover, the Kindle iPhone app is currently exclusive for ebooks and not for newspapers and magazines as yet. And one more thing, the dictionary feature is not available yet on the Kindle for iPhone app. These are minor drawbacks though, and with the way things are going with the Kindle, these features are surely not far off.

Editor’s Update Oct. 2009: This Amazon Kindle review was done when the device first hit the market. Since its release, it has been replaced with the “Amazon Kindle 2.” As of October 2009, the Kindle 2 was reduced in price to $259. In addition, there is now an international Kindle version for users outside of the U.S.

While the Kindle is certainly the market leader for the ebook reader market, Apple is fast on its heels with the iPhone. From listening to music or watching your favorite movies to playing games, you can do it with the iPhone so why not read books on the device as well? That’s what Apple seems to think anyway and as a result is quickly trying to give the Kindle a run for its money as an ebook reader.

Recently, it was announced that several major publishers have signed deals with ScrollMotion, a New York mobile application developer. ScrollMotion is a new app for the iPhone and iPod Touch that will allow consumers to buy and read electronic versions of newly released and best-selling books. This latest iPhone app puts Apple directly in the ebook business in a big way.

Despite Apple’s ambitions, there are two main differences that should favor the Kindle (at least for now) as strictly an ebook reader. The first obvious difference is the size of the display. Try reading a chapter of your favorite book on a 3.5 inch display, the size of the display on the iPhone, and you’ll likely go crazy. Contrast that to the Kindle’s six inch diagonal display and there’s no comparison in reading comfort.

The other main difference between these devices is the technology that is used in the displays themselves. The Kindle uses e-Ink technology to display text while the iPhone works much like a computer monitor where light is emitted to display text. The difference in these technologies is dramatic. When you read text on the Kindle, it looks just like text on paper and there is virtually no eye strain, even after long reading sessions. With the iPhone, reading text is much like reading from your computer monitor (on a much smaller scale) and will almost certainly strain your eyes.

When you compare these devices side-by-side as strictly ebook readers, the larger display and display technology easily favors the Amazon Kindle. There are two things in Apple’s favor, however, that could trump the Kindle’s success. The first being iPhone’s availability and price, and the second being the convenience of being able to do everything with one small device. The iPhone is readily available and is cheaper than the Kindle. As for screen size and potential eye strain, consumers may be willing to make these sacrifices if it means they can use one device for everything.

The ideal gadget would have the features of the iPhone and the Kindle, but that’s never going to happen anytime soon. I believe in the end dedicated ebook readers like the Kindle will always have a leg up on smaller communication and entertainment devices like the iPhone. That doesn’t mean Apple is out of the game. Who knows, could the Apple “iReader” be right around the corner?
