When I first bought the iPad, iBooks was one of the first apps that I chose to download. This is significant only because I had up to that point been completely opposed to the e-reader movement. I consider myself a traditionalist when it comes to my reading, preferring the texture of the pages, the ability to dog-ear my spot in a book, the self-satisfied feeling I get when looking at a particularly large tome after I have finished reading it. Audiobooks have become somewhat of a staple for me now. It seemed equally important to try out my first e-book experience on another Apple device. I was not disappointed, and now wonder about life before my iBooks app.

In an effort to be fair, I decided to download and try out the free Amazon Kindle app on my iPad as well. Even my obvious devotion to all products Apple aside, I have to say that I found iBooks to be a much better e-reading experience. Apple went all out in trying to make the e-book experience as close to real life as possible. Your books are downloaded from the iBooks store to your iBooks bookshelf. When you open a book to read it, the design of the e-book page looks like a page in a real book.

The Amazon Kindle e-reader is definitely less flashy and smooth looking. You have to log into your Amazon.com account to purchase and download your books, which just doesn’t seem as seamless as the iBooks store. When you select a book, it downloads to the homepage of the Kindle app. The appearance of the book once opened is simply a full screen of text, much like a pdf would appear.

Though I have come to really enjoy using my iBooks reader, I will say that neither the iBooks nor Kindle readers could ever rival the experience of reading a real paper book, but I do enjoy the ability to download new books whenever I want to, without having to go to the library or the bookstore. The books are not cheap, however, so I primarily stick with reading the free classics that are available on iBooks (there are also free classics available on Kindle). There are frustrations, like the inability to easily flip to any page, but those are also the differences that will continue to keep real books my first choice for reading.

While Nook and Kindle are similarly priced, the iPad is a much more expensive device. It maybe a little unfair to compare Apple’s iPad with the Nook and Kindle 2, however it is an ebook reader among many other things so we will include it here.

The Nook and Kindle are very similar in both size and weight, so is the iPad, except a little heavier. Kindle uses e-ink technology to accurately re-create the look of printed paper of a book, as does the Noble while the iPad has and LED screen.

While the iPad costs a lot more, you are able to perform much more on the device. The app store entitles you to a wealth of entertainment and games, films and other applications such as tube maps and interactive language courses to name a few.

Kindle does not have an app store at all while the Nook is promised to support this too (though not as thoroughly as Apple’s device).

Really if you budget allows, the iPad is the obvious choice and many believe it has rendered the Nook and Kindle old fashioned already. If you solely just want an ebook reader however, the Kindle may just take the lead from the Nook due to it’s International coverage, and text-to-speech feature which reads the book to you.

It is personal preference which you prefer, however all three devices are worthy purchases and simply offer different features at different prices. Choose the features that are important to you and your decision should almost be made as to which is best for you. Best Device For Reading

I just received my Kindle DX and I love it. As to the cost. I have run out of bookshelves and would have had to get another for about the same price so I can’t really complain about the price.

The Kindle comes fully registered and ready to go as soon as it arrives. The instruction manual doesn’t explain everything so if you are a novice, you may have to call customer service for help. If you are gadget literate, you’ll have no problem.

The screen is great, the resolution very good. The “text to speech” option is as good as most voice recognition software and it does make odd emphasis on some sentenances, but not too bad. The page refresh is fast and the download fast and seamless. It allows you to notate words, or sentances. This is a great option for my literary club

So far, the Kindle is well worth the money and I have yet to experience a problem. I would recommend it to anyone. Hopefully soon you will be able to put school text books.

I purchased the Kindle DX Wireless Reading Device and when it was finally determined that where I live is not an area that receives the signal to download books, I bundled up the Kindle and returned it. The return was handled quickly and without question.

I enjoyed becoming acquainted with the product. The instructions was very good and I am sorry that the area I live is not included in the area where the signal to download the books covers.

My only complaint is that I should have been told somewhere during the purchase that based on my zip code that my area is outside the service area and I wouldn’t be able to download books at home, which was the entire reason I purchased te Kindle.

Amazon kindle 2 – Way Better than I Expected!

I hesitated on buying a kindle when the first generation came out, and continued to drag my feet until a week ago when I saw the Amazon kindle 2 available online. I was worried it wouldn’t be the same as reading a real book, and therefore would fall into disuse. After moving again and carrying heavy loads of books, and because I get really upset about wrinkled covers and torn pages, I finally decided to buy the new generation of the device.

I am extremely happy I did. I have read more in the last week than I have in years, and I am surprised how extensive the library is. Being able to get my books without going to a book store and when I want to read them is also a plus. The screen really looks like a page straight from a book, and I am also happy there is no back light on the screen, my eyes hurt from staring at an LCD screen in the dark too long and it isn’t good for my vision. I am very pleased with this Amazon kindle 2, and I’m trying to convince all of my friends and family to order one.

I was reading some reviews and understand the frustration people have with AMAZON releasing a kindle 2 at the same price as the older Amazon kindle 1.0 and leaving them to upgrade if they want without any special discount…

That said, I just wanted to share my experience with the Kindle. I like books, but like to be mobile and I live in a small apartment. This creates a problem because books are SOOOOO heavy. I tried putting them in my Iphone but my eyes get very tried reading the screen. I finally decided to order the Amazon kindle 2 when it was launched and just got it today. Let me say this: it’s awesome. The things I love best about it:

– the new synch thing they have going is a seamless experience
– the screen is amazing – just like paper. I even love the screensaver when it is of
– I love that I can put all my books (Except the ones not available for purchase) in one location and give my old books away and save space!
– The list goes on.

Not having had the old Kindle or having anything to compare with other than my iphone as a competing product I love it. And I’m looking forward to reading!
