Very impressed. Text to speech should be allowed

After a few days I’m very impressed with the new Kindle Amazon. I had some slight experience with the old model and this one, while not making any earth-shattering improvements, improves on much of what needed to be improved from the old model. There are a few things still lacking which prevents me from giving a 5 star review. Most things have been touched on by others, so I will not give an overall review. These are my personal issues, others may not have them, and I could be wrong about some things as I am still trying to learn the device.

1. How about some folders? Once you get a decent library built up (either archived online, or on the device itself, it could be difficult to find the specific book you are looking for. Sure for now it’s ok as I have like 4 books in there, but what about 12 moths from now? I can only imagine scrolling through 50 pages of books, which seemingly have no rhyme or reason in the order they are shown. Again, I could be wrong about this and there are ways to do this, but I have not found it yet.

2. Kindle Amazon store, please let me sort by date, relevance, etc. My way around this is to look up stuff online here and then go directly to the book on the device.

3. Why not put the page back button on the left where the next page button is? Several times I made the intuitive move of hitting that button to go back to check a drawing, or a previous passage, and am suddenly a page or two ahead of where I actually was. Seems to me the left button should be page back, the right button should be page forward. When I have to page back i have to make a significant effort to find the button. This will probably be a non issue with use, but it’s not as intuitive as I would like.

4. Is there a way to cancel a buy other than the page right after you accidentally click the button? With the delay in cursor movement I have several times clicked right past this page and ended up with books I don’t want and I have yet to find a way to delete them or cancel the transaction. Oh well more books.

Also, I do not agree with the decision to turn off text-to-speech at the author’s request. How is this any different than me buying an actual book and reading it to someone? I’m not copying the book.

I actually don’t think I will use this feature much or at all, but it is nice to have available.
So henceforth I will not buy any books that have this feature turned off. Hopefully others will agree, and make the authors see some common sense.

Thats about it. After 3 short days, overall I am very happy with this product. A few improvements would be nice, but there is nothing that is a deal-breaker. And as I stated before, maybe these issues are me and not the Kindle Amazon, and I just need to learn to use it better.

Works as advertised

Had mine for a month now…Does pretty much what its supposed to do. Download of books is flawless – no issues. Appreciate features like adjusting the text size. Have gotten use to what each button does – ie home versus menu. Very readable. I use it on the bus on the way to work, and am able to see it with a variety of lighting conditions from direct light through the window to bus light in the evening.

On the critical side, the buttons are too stiff for my liking. The “5 way” selector is a bit annoying – not real easy to manipulate and the back/next take a stronger push than I’d like.
Have a newspaper subscription (LA Times)..its ok..not great. There’s no size difference in headlines – all articles have the same weight, so you don’t have any way to visually assess the relative weight of each article. Navigating through sections works, but again isn’t great…and I miss the pictures!

Overall a good product. No regrets on purchase, but can still be improved…

A chief pleasure

I got my new Kindle Amazon 2 over two weeks ago and I use it everyday. Every morning when I wake up, I switch on the wireless feature, update my blog subscription to [..], and use the Text to Speech feature and have my favorite blog read to me as I shave. Trust me, this is five times awesome. It is like having my own custom-made news show everyday. In general, the Text to Speech feature is incredibly useful so long as the text in question is mostly prose without a whole lot of dialogue because the voice does not always pause in the right spots.

My main concern before purchasing this was the cost of the device but then I browsed for books. While it is true that newer books only benefit from a moderate reduction in price, older books (you know, the ones written by good authors) are cheap with prices ranging from ridiculously low (less than [..] for a complete anthology of all GK Chesterton’s works.

That is over 400 works — including novels) [..] or even free for some public domain works. In addition to the Chesterton, I also purchased the complete works of HP Lovecraft, the complete works of William Shakespeare (including sonnets), a parrallel Latin-English Vulgate, the Douhay Rheims Bible, the entire Suma Theologica, and several other books the grand total of which would have easily[..] for their paperback versions and, weighing over 80 lbs, shipping would have been crazy expensive. I got all of these tomes for cheap and can carry the entire library in one hand.

The wireless feature works very well. It is free after all but do not expect to be able to use it outside the US. While it functions perfectly in Hawaii, it did not work in the American territories of Guam and Saipan.

My wife also proclaims this device has already improved my intelligence and made me “insightful and engaging”. Whatever that means…

We are both writers of the Nanowrimo sort and look forward to publishing in this format.

Amazing. Useful. Indispensable.

My only complaint is that I cannot use this wonderful device to display the other Asian languages I speak (Chinese and Japanese). If it had this one very important feature, I would have given it a perfect score. But purchasing it has allowed me to recoup the cost of its purchase in super cheap books, and has more than earned its keep by giving me the convenience of carrying an library in my hand.

If You Love to Read, The kindle 2 reading device is The Most Fun in The World

I resisted the first kindle 2 reading device for all the regular reasons: “I like the look and feel of paper, it’s not really a book, who wants to read Anna Karenina on a computer screen, it’s too complicated, it needs to be charged, etc.”

But when I read the reviews of kindle 2 reading device, I decided to go for it.

What a FANTASTIC surprise. Yes, like Jeff says, the device disappears instantly, it just becomes a light, thin book, sitting in the perfect Amazon black holder.

I just came from a bus ride up Central Park West in New York City. As tried to read, thirty different people came up to me wanting to see it. I did a demo after only having it for a day and everyone was mesmerized.

What I love is that you can download books, magazines and newspapers right on the spot anywhere, instantly, NOT NEEDING WIFI is like a miracle.

My Husband Won’t See Me Anymore

I have been anxiously awaiting this product for MONTHS. I discovered it in November and then put it on my Christmas list. I ended up getting enough gift certificates from loved ones and friends to purchase. I was thrilled! I was even more thrilled when I found out that I would be getting the upgraded version!

Okay, so I finally received my Kindle yesterday and have been using it ever since. In fact, I had to pull myself away from reading to write this review My husband has already complained that he won’t see me anymore. I simply chuckle and get back to reading

I am greatly impressed with the overall design. The page turn buttons are strategically placed so that I don’t constantly hit it, unless I need to. I really like that it remember where I am at in each book that I am reading. I have a small son who interupts my reading and now I don’t have to worry about finding my lost spot anymore.

From my bed last night I was able to download several sample books and then decide if I wanted them. When I wanted to take a break, I was able to go to Facebook (not that this was a big deal). I really like the feature of using the internet for things that I want to look up.

I have had absolutely no eye strain and I have been reading for hours! It is just like a book, only better, in my opinion.

I LOVE this product and would very much recommend it to others!

I love it!

I’ve had my Kindle 2 Device for about three weeks now and I absolutely love it. It took me a few days to get used to the screen flash for the page turn, but I don’t even notice it now. Downloading books is incredibly easy and I find that I’m reading far more than I was before I owned the device. I’ve downloaded several from Project Gutenberg as well as from Amazon itself. Books I never would have thought to read before are now on my Kindle 2 Device.

I even took it to the emergency room a few days ago and it saved me. I was in the waiting room for almost an hour, and waited another 3 once I was in a room. I wasn’t sick – I was bit by a potentially rabid cat – so I would have been extremely bored without it. I didn’t have time to search my bookshelf for a book before leaving for the ER, so I just grabbed my Kindle 2 Device and had almost 100 books to choose from.

This thing is amazing, and I’m so happy I bought it.

Fantastic for vacations and travel; ideal for visually impaired!

Although pricey, the real value of this purchase is that it got me to read again. Love the fact that I can go on vacation without having to pick out books in advance, or get something at the airport. Love that it remembers where I am if I fall asleep. Love that I can read it on the beach. Love that it holds a charge for so long.

Would be nice if it had a backlight option, but books don’t have that anyway. As I get sleepier, I like to enlarge the font, which is a nice feature. And I’m constantly using the dictionary to look up words that I “kind of” know — great feature. Color will be a nice addition some day, but totally unnecessary.

Originally got this for my grandfather with glaucoma, who now has just tunnel vision. Seemed like the perfect thing for an ex-avid reader, since you can change font size, have it read to you, download newspapers and magazines, and you don’t have to drive to the book store or library! But if you can’t program the clock on your microwave, you probably can’t use the Kindle 2 Device. It is very easy for anyone under 60. A good idea for the visually impaired.

Wow! Just Wow! An avid lover of the printed page is a Kindle convert

I have had the Device Kindle 2 for about 24 hours now. Please note, this is the review of the Device Kindle 2 brand new, and does not give any info on the long-term sustainability of the product.

What I love:

First, let me state that I *hate* reading on a screen. It hurts my eyes, I find it difficult to retain the information. When I took the GREs, I scheduled one of the exams offered twice a year via pencil and paper (do they even offer that anymore?). Why? Because I couldn’t stand reading the exam on screen. The eInk does fully deliver – after a few moments, I completely forget that I’m reading a screen and not from a sheet of paper. It doesn’t hurt my eyes, I can take notes, I can bookmark, I can highlight… best of all, I can then import that to my hard drive (it would be great if Amazon integrated this with software such as EndNote).

I love that I can download the first chapter of a book that interests me before I buy. I am an avid reader (I have an entire room of my home dedicated to books – it doesn’t contain my collection). I have, on many occasions, read a book’s description or title and thought “Awesome, I’m getting that.” However, upon receiving the book its content wasn’t quite up to par. The sample option is by far the greatest advantage of this device.

I love the portability of this device. It fits into my purse. I travel a lot on extended trips. When I’m gone for 2 months, I’ll bring half a dozen books with me and then pick up a few more on my trip (that can get costly, especially if you’re in a non-english speaking country and with the new airline restrictions on weight and checked luggage). Now, I can buy several books (and download more if I’m stateside) and it never takes more than 10 ozs in my purse (not even my carry-on). It’s a *huge* benefit for people who travel frequently.

In terms of the device itself – it feels solid, it looks sleek. The buttons are put in a nice place – they fit my finger placement well. It’s not too easy to turn a page by accident (but a little out of the way if you want to turn back one). I have rather dainty fingers – so I could see people with larger hands/fingers having some difficulty with the keyboard.

The battery life is pretty awesome.

I love being able to select font size. I’ve just entered my 30s and the first thing I’ve noticed is that, at the end of a long day, I have trouble focusing my eyes to small print. I don’t feel the need for large-print books, but being able to adjust the font by just a few points is *amazingly* helpful. I have recommended this to my mother (who suffers some serious macular degeneration) just for this reason – large print novels are few and far between.

What I don’t like (or why only 4 and not 5 stars)

I truly believe that the Device Kindle 2 is the eReader of the future and has the potential to revolutionize reading a la Star Trek. However, the price is rather prohibitive 9 is a car payment for most people. Bring this baby down to 0 and I suspect it will rival the iPod as the new portable electronic device.

Pricing on eBooks isn’t always a good deal. I have found a few eBooks that are listed on clearance on Amazon (in paperback) for but the Kindle version is still .99 or even higher. I also think that the price listing savings is rather deceptive – I’m not saving -15 per eBook, but rather .50-1.50 (when you compare Amazon’s already listed discount). So, be a little more honest. The biggest savings come with new releases in hardback – but even then, unless you’re buying at an airport, no one sells books for ‘list price’ anymore. Come on Amazon! Don’t insult your customers like this!

No WiFi option – let’s face it, 3G isn’t available everywhere and just isn’t all that speedy anymore. Why not a WiFi option? Seems a bit silly.

No SD slot – they’re touting the ability to load audible books (a great resource I use regularly), but with the skimpy 1.25 G hard-drive, I’m not going to be loading them on Device Kindle 2 in lieu of my iPod anytime soon.

Overall – if you can afford it, get it. It’s a great eReader – well worth the investment, especially if you’re always on the run. I can’t wait until a student version comes out – I will push it on all my students!

This is a great product deserving 5 stars. I waited several months to review so I could use most of the functions. I have read many books , fiction and non-fiction and used the free trials of newspapers and magazines. There is a short learning period, but the functionality is wonderful. It is easy to read in most conditions; you can use an accessory light if existing light is very dim. Get the book cover that comes with it. Here are some great features: turning pages from both sides of the Kindle Amazon, browsing the book, using the built in dictionary, bookmark and highlighter, changing the size of the type, returning to the page you left off, easily flipping between books, newspapers and magazine articles, easily charging the battery, free trials and many free books especially classics, downloads and browsing directly from the Kindle Amazon store in Amazon with multiple reviews on-line and much more.

There a some minor issues: the screen is relatively small so you will turn pages more rapidly (the new model is bigger), a contrast control for the type might be helpful, table of contents are not always available, the wireless connection varies on your location (I can’t connect in the mountains), figures are OK but not the best. For me I just do not care for newspapers and magazines in this format, but it does navigate well enough. Some book prices are very good, but current releases are usually about . The Kindle itself is pricey, especially the new one.

Still for the avid reader what could be better? You will read and enjoy more books this way. In fact one Kindle Amazon for two or more in the family might not be adequate.

Kindle Amazon – Perfect for people with Book Acquisition Disease

Some people probably walk into bookstores and buy one book, which they read completely before returning and buying one more book. Some people probably never have library fines. I am not one of those people.

I’m the type that can’t leave a bookstore without an armload of books. Used bookstores are even worse, and my “books to read someday” pile can get pretty big.

Enter Kindle Amazon. The best button in the built-in store menu is “save for later.” Now I can not only sample a generous portion of each book, I can defer paying for it until I’m actually ready to read it. Then I just scan my “saved for later” folder and pay for a book at the moment I’m actually going to read it.

So if you suffer from B.A.D. (Book Acquisition Disease) as I do, do yourself a favor and get yourself a Kindle. It will pay for itself pretty quickly.

I have my Kindle Amazon for a little more then 2 weeks. I love it. I have always been a library person and was really hesitant about spending the money on a Kindle and also on books. My husband works with a guy that has a Kindle Amazon and kept coming home and telling me about it. Curiousity got the best of me and I started reading about it and reading all of the reviews. I suddenly became very interested. So, my husband bought me one for Mother’s Day. I really can’t explain it, but for some reason, reading on the Kindle Amazon is so much more pleasent.

Reading goes alot quicker, and it is so much easier on my eyes. Reading out in the sun is actully enjoyable now. I no longer need to wear my reading glasses (yes, I am over 40) and therefore can read with my sunglasses on. I have even read without my sunglasses and there really isn’t any glare. I just love it, to the point were I am annoyed if I have to read an actual book. I had a couple of books on hold at my library and I felt obligated to read them verses downloading them to my Kindle. I couldn’t wait to be done with them. Sad, but true.

My only gripe with the Kindle Amazon is the not being able to “borrow” books or lend books to friends. I am hoping down the road Amazon addresses that. I know alot of people who would buy the Kindle Amazon in a heartbeat if borrowing and lending was part of the deal. I hope this helped those of you that are undecided. I really do love it!

Kindle Amazon – My mother, aged 92, can read again!

Recently, I left my 92 year old mother in the car while I ran into a store. At the last minute, I handed her my Kindle Amazon 1, opened it up to a book I thought she would like, and showed her how to change pages. My errand took a bit longer than I expected, but by the time I returned, she refused to put it down. For the last ten years she has not been able to read for more than a few minutes at a time.

Even with large-type books, her eyes would tire and she would see double. Now, all the sudden, she can read for hours on end with no problems. In order to get time with my Kindle, I had to get her a Kindle Amazon 2 of her own. The only major problem is that type face on the menus cannot be adjusted — a feature I think the Sony Reader has — and labels on buttons, the location tracker, etc, are very small. The Kindle Amazon has really improved her quality of life and given her back something she loves to do.

Review for people with poor vision

Device Kindle 2 is great. I bought it because I was having difficulty reading books, especially those with small ptint because I have glaucoma. I was impressed by its ability to change font size.

Well, I find that, almost without exception, Device Kindle 2 lives up to my expectations. I thought that I would need to use the largest type size, but I find that I am using the second or third largest. This, I think, is be Cause the contrast is so good.

The controls are easy to use, and the system works well, once you have learned it. All the stuff in the promotional video is true!

However, I have a few problems,only one of which is serious. This is that, while we have variable font sizes for the books, etc., we don’t have them for the instructional screens that appear, where the print is very small, though I’m sure it is fine for people with undiminished vision.

There are things one has to get used to doing in a different way, like going to the end of the book (not easy), or flipping through chapters, but I guess one learns how to do these things with practice.

I would like a previous page button on the right side as well as the left; the on/off switch is not easy; using the long location numbers is a pain. The “Sync to Furthest Page Read” command rarely succeeds. If you are using a large font size there are difficulties sometimes in accessing elements of, say, a Table of Contents, if the list goes onto the next page. One can resolve the difficulty by changing the font size.

I am impressed by the quality of the reader voices, both male and female. It is by far the best electonic voice I have heard. Most of the time it sounds like a real person. It does sound artificial when it reads titles and headings, which it runs together. It also reads typos the way they are written, but that is the fault of the Kindle book, not of the Device Kindle 2. The book I am reading, The Cairo Trilogy, by Naguib Mahfouz, has many,many “typos.” It runs words together like “hisheart” for “his heart” (over 200 times), “hishead” for “his head” (about 200 times), etc. It also reads “abd” (partof an Arabic name) as “a, b, d.”

The availability of books on Device Kindle 2 is an important one. There are 250,000 books, but, of these, I’m sure that there are at least 200,000 that I don’t want to read. In checking a random sample of books I was interested in I found that about one in three was available as a Device Kindle 2 edition. Amazon.com is working on this and I am very appreciative. Things will get better.

In spite of all my quibbles I think the Device Kindle 2 is a marvellous device and I am very happy with it. I’d give it 5 stars except that that would look inconsistent with my criticisms.

An excellent single-purpose device – which is what it’s meant to be!

Having read a wide range of positive and negative reviews, and having owned my Reading Kindle for about a month… I wanted to comment on a common remark made in some of the negative reviews.

I have noticed a few people making snide comments about the web browser, or lack of color or touch screen. In other words, they seem to be comparing the Reading Kindle to the iPhone, or other multimedia portable device. It seems as tho Barnes and Noble have responded to this by including a color touch screen on their new ‘nook’ (although I don’t think it has a basic web browser).

If you are looking for a portable multimedia device – don’t buy a Kindle. Buy an iPhone, load it with mp3s, videos and apps, pay 0 a month for service… and enjoy!

If you are looking for a READING device… a device which emulates the experience of reading a physical book, but also allows you to store, access and purchase a huge range of books, newspapers and magazines, weighs just 10 oz and will travel with you anywhere… get a Reading Kindle!

In other words… the kindle is very good at what its meant to do. Very good! I find that I read more, and more widely, then I ever have before. I find the magazine or newspaper subscription service very useful too. I didn’t give it 5 stars because it isn’t perfect and I look forward to Amazon further developing it with the next generation (although I will be content to keep my 2.0 when they do).

There seems to be a modern obsession with universal devices that do everything all at once. Thats great, and convenient, but they always seem to do everything ok, but nothing really really well. To give an example – professional photographers wouldn’t use an iPhone to take your wedding snaps even tho it includes a camera… they would use a device dedicated to that function… If you want to play video games, the iPhone has some excellent apps, but a dedicated games console would be far better. The point being… multi-purpose devices are great, but sacrifice quality on one area in order to provide a wide range of features. Single-purpose devices do one thing, and do it very well… so it is with the Reading Kindle.

The very reason sony, amazon and now barnes and noble are making ebook readers is because no other portable all-in-one devices are good as e-readers. Their LCD backlit screens are AWEFUL for prolonged reading, and their screens are often too small etc.

Absolutely THRILLED with my Kindle 2 Reading

I am a 50 year old Bibliophile (Book lover and avid reader). I have severe osteoarthritis and have had numerous surgeries to replace diseased joints. Recently, I had left and right thumb base replacements (my thumbs are like new!) and a left wrist fusion (my wrist can no longer twist or bend-but the pain is gone!!). I am left handed too-and this has made it difficult for me to hold books.

I am absolutely thrilled to say that the Kindle 2 Reading has given me back my joy of reading!!!! It is a marvelous product and rates 5 stars for me. I was concerned that it would not feel as inviting as a “real” book-but not so! I am immediately immersed in my reading. The print is easy on the eye and the light weight of the device and easy to use controls make reading even more of a joy! I am also someone who regularly reads 3-4 books at a time (different genres) and to be able to carry “all” my books with me is wonderful.

Then, I can easily choose which one to read at any given time! My husband and I travel frequently and the Kindle 2 Reading will leave me plenty of room in my suitcase since I won’t need to pack multiple books. (my husband is happy about that!) Thank you for this great electronic device! I love it!

Very Pleased

I received my Kindle 2 Reading last Wednesday, and I have spent every free moment since reading and finding its full potential. I have yet to find an aspect or a feature that I am completely dissatisfied with.

I’m sure that without reading the User’s Guide, anyone can take the Kindle 2 Reading out of the box and figure out how to purchase his or her first book in a few minutes. All of the controls and buttons are well placed and easy to understand. The 5-way controller allows for the easiest insertion of highlights or notes. I couldn’t imagine trying to navigate internet pages without it.

The online capabilities are impressive though there are a few draw backs. It is a little slow with the refresh rate at times. Also, when I pull up a website that is outside of the already bookmarked sites, it may take a little bit of time as well. However, my favorite forum sites and local newspapers are all there. Once they are loaded, it’s as good as being at my computer.

I have never really been a reader who takes notes while reading. If I do that with a printed book, I’ll lose my pace and focus. With the Kindle 2 Reading, it’s very fast and easy to insert a quick note and not have to wrestle back the pages attached to a stiff spine of a small soft cover book.

I’m enthralled by the all of the other features. The selection of texts is incredible. The Text-to-Speech function is great for times when my hands and eyes busy with other tasks. The MP3 function is good, but I wish that it would include other types of music files because all of my Chopin and Beethoven are in MP4 format. If anyone needs to find a graduation gift for a senior in an English Literature program, this is my recommendation.

I’m sold!

I had been a die-hard paper book guy, but finally decided to give Kindle Amazon a try after reading the User’s Manual online. I must say, it is one well-designed device. The screen is very easy on the eyes and Amazon has done a great job putting the technology in the background so that you get that much-loved “lost in the book” feeling when you read. I don’t know how they did it, but I absolutely do not miss the paperback. In fact, it’s more immersive than a paperback since you’re not having to constantly fight the book’s desire to spring closed.

I can read for hours (when I have time) without eye strain. And changing the text font size is a huge plus for avoiding eye strain or adjusting to your reading environment on the fly. I can also share books with family members that have a Kindle Amazon , an iPhone, or an iPod Touch (up to units are allowed on the account).

My favorite features:

I received my order of the Amazon Kindle International version yesterday afternoon and I rushed to install it (after I bought a plug connector, as the Kindle comes with the American plug). I was able to start it up effortless and in no time I was reading books (in English) acquired from the Amazon Kindle store. I think that the device itself works very well and provides for a comfortable reading platform.

The problem is that the content is not there yet for the European market:

One of the reasons I had for buying the Kindle was to have paperless access during my morning train commuting of my favorite newspaper, the Financial Times. Well, it is past eight in the morning and I am still waiting for the trial edition of the FT to be downloaded in my Amazon Kindle. I know it is the American Edition of the FT, but what is the use of a digital newspaper service that will not be accessible in the early hours of the morning?

Other reason for buying the Amazon Kindle was to have a subscription of the Economist, which to my disappointment is not available for Europeans. Same thing with books in the Spanish language, my mother tongue. Though the Amazon Kindle store has the latest authors of the Spanish language in its original language, these are not available for Europeans. I understand that there are copy rights issues here but it is rather bitter to see that the Sony Ebook store started recently to sell these books to Europeans (though at prices that near EUR 30). I recommend that German speakers and other Europeans do sufficient research on what is actually available in their language before deciding which ebook to buy.

Overall, I like this ebook but I am disappointed with the current content. I guess my Amazon Kindle book will stay by my night table and will not be travelling with me in the daily commute or business trips.

Amazing reading experience

I love the Amazon Kindle! I have only owned it for 2 weeks, but have already finished 4 rather large books on it.

Here is what I have noticed so far:

– I always used to loose my place when reading a real book, but the kindle makes it very hard for this to happen, it even
syncs the last page read between devices (if you find yourself reading a part of a book on an iphone for instance)

– I can read through books much faster than I used to be able to (since I have been working I have only read at most a book a month — never would I dream 2 books a week!) I attribute a lot of this to the ability to increase the font size (with my bad eyes I found my self squinting reading normal books)

– I learn more about what I’m reading. I used to come across words I didn’t know, and just try to figure out the meaning from the surrounding text. Nothing beats being able to quickly get a dictionary definition, wikipedia entry, or google search result on an unfamiliar word.

– Can read without interruption when its windy outside!

– Can carry huge 1000+ page books that most people would feel silly hauling around.

– Great for reading through large work documents (with the ability to quickly search, highlight and add notes)

I Love my Kindle

I have had my kindle 2 reading device for 2 weeks now. I read all the reviews several times before I bought so I had a good idea of what it is and is not. It is all that is claims to be. I had a bit of trouble navigating in the Bible, but I think I have that all figured out. All other books have been a cinch. I love getting the books within a minute. Actually, my kindle 2 reading device will do much more than I will ever use. I wanted an electronic book and that is what it is. I am an avid reader. I have sooo many books. It is easy to read.

The pages turn at the right speed. I never lose my place. I can go from book to book. I bought the leather cover and it actually feels like I am holding a book. The battery lasts a long time. I found that turning off the Whispernet connection made it last longer. I plug in my cell phone at night, so I just plug in my kindle 2 reading device when I see the battery getting low. I love my kindle 2 reading device. Now I can have a library without filling my house with books.

I kept my eye on the kindle 1 reading device and never was willing to pay the price for the 1st generation device. When the kindle 2 reading device was announced there was enough enthusiasm from kindle 1 reading device owners that I was willing to give it a shot, and I am certainly happy with that decision now.

It is important to keep in mind what this device is and what it is not. It is not a laptop, pocket PC, or digital picture frame. What it is, is a great alternative to lugging around multiple paper/hardback books. If you enjoy reading you will likely enjoy this device. Though it doesn’t have the same “feel” of a book in your hands it will honestly disappear while you are reading. The display reminds me of a paperback in view and reability, and the ability to increase or decrease your font makes this a great reader for those who are visually impaired.

The ability to read samples of books you are considering is also great. I was always the type to say, “Oh, that book sounds good I’ll look for it in the bookstore,” and then forget to pick it up. The kindle 2 reading device is not just a reader, but a portable bookstore. I also love having my newspaper delivered every morning to the kindle 2 reading device. Easy to read and it saves a lot of paper

I bought my Kindle Device 2 mainly to read the Washington Post. The cost of a yearly subscription to the Post where I live is about the same as the cost of the Kindle Device. So within two years, it would pay for itself.

In addition, when reading the Post, I rarely read one of the sections or the classified. And there were days when I didn’t get to it at all and it went straight from doorstep to recycling bin.

The Kindle Device cut out all of the paper that was being used and wasted on printing the Post.

I was concerned that it would not be the same as reading the paper with a steaming mug of coffee. And let’s just get it straight that it is nowhere near the same. I can’t say it is a lot better, but it isn’t worse. In fact, there are some advantages. The biggest advantage is that I can read an entire story without searching the paper to find the second half buried in a corner of A13 with an odd name on it. If ind myself actually reading more of the paper and reading entire stories instead of just skimming through stories and moving on to the next.

I also like that I can get the Washington Post now from almost anywhere in the country so when traveling I don’t have to wonder if the home town paper is any good or where I can find a good newsstand.

As for the Kindle Device itself, the Kindle controls are pretty easy to use once you get used to them and clicking through chapters and pages and stories becomes second nature.

I don’t really have any cons at this time except that the device does feel fragile. I worry that I may drop it or spill a drop of coffee on it and ruin it. I took it camping and to the beach and had it inside a waterproof case and then in a plastic bag just in case it rained.

I think the one recommendation I would make for Kindle Device 3′s shape and size is to make it a toughbook type of Kindle Device with sealed control surfaces or create some sort of sealing cover that allows you to read it while the Kindle Device is in the cover.

Oh yeah, and the 1500+ free or almost free books will probably keep me going much longer than Amazon hopes.

Didn’t think I’d like it so much!

I’m not going to bother with all the individual technical aspects–other reviewers have already done better with that than I could, so I’ll just do a brief “why it works for me” thing.

I had no intention of buying a Reading Device Kindle. I think the price is still too high, and I really love the feel of an actual book. Still, I thought they were pretty cool, and would have liked one especially for travel, because I like to switch between several things I’m reading and never know what I’ll be in the mood for. So when my husband gave me my Reading Device Kindle for my birthday, I was pretty excited.

My biggest fear was that I just wouldn’t enjoy the reading without a “real” book in my hands. Turns out I was flat-out wrong. For me, the Reading Device Kindle does what its creators intended–it becomes “invisible” when I’m reading. I am able to be fully absorbed in whatever I’m reading to the point that I forget that I’m holding the thing. It is sleek, lightweight, and very comfortable…and the pages can’t flip in the breeze! I like that I can adjust the font size. Visually, it looks very much like a printed page, and there is none of the eyestrain my old eyes sometimes suffer from with back lit screens. I like being able to subscribe to interesting blogs, and I like having a wealth of reading material at hand, in one place. I absolutely adore the fact that there is a built-in dictionary and that I can instantly get the definition of an unfamiliar word.

Will it replace all my books? No. I will never lose my enchantment with the feel and smell of printed books. And there are many books, especially ones with a great many illustrations, that simply won’t adapt well to the Reading Device Kindle in its current form. Which brings me to one of the few reasons why I had to give this 4 stars instead of 5. The lack of good, color illustrations is a drawback. The lack of back lighting, while easier on my eyes, is at times inconvenient. The fact that the Reading Device Kindle does not accept other common ebook formats is a problem. My biggest complaint is the lack of a way to make folders to create a better organization system for the titles that I’m storing.

All in all, though less than perfect, the Reading Device Kindle is a marvelous tool that has increased my reading enjoyment immensely.

Well worth the investment

If you are thinking about buying a Reading Device Kindle stop debating and just do it. I thought about buying an eBook reader for a few months and had thought i would go with the B&N Nook until i compared book prices between B&N and Amazon. Amazons book are priced significantly lower and easier to find in my opinion. I received my Reading Device Kindle on Tuesday and I am more than happy with it… I Love It! Searching for books and downloading them is fast and easy, the screen is very easy on the eyes. I can’t even begin how much i like the ability to make notes while reading and bookmarking passages. This thing makes me want to reead more than i thought possible.

Waking up to a fresh copy of your newspaper of choice is great too. The only real issue i have is that it would be nice to have a SDcard slot to boost the internal memory, although i am nowhere near filling my Reading Device Kindle i would definatly increase my memory instead of shuffling books between my computer and device. Not really a greivance but it would be a nice addition to this fantastic product.

95%, a Few Ideas for Improvement

The Device Kindle 2 is an excellent reading device. I think it surpasses the standard hardcover book, with the exception of color-critical books, such as graphics, design and art. I am finding that I am actually reading faster and with less effort on the Device Kindle 2. I have a guess for why this is (and no supporting evidence). When you read a book, the page naturally curves, so the line of text you are reading is not perfectly straight. And a line does not start directly below where the previous line ended. On the Device Kindle 2, the reading surface is perfectly flat, so I think your brain has less work to do to decode a sentence. And being able to adjust the font size will be useful for many.

Whispernet is excellent and is the killer app for this product. Being able to select a book, buy it and start reading within a minute or two is amazing. It’s a bookstore in your hands.
I do have a few ideas on how it could be improved:

Footnotes are a bit of a pain. They are essentially a link to a separate page in the book. To read a footnote, you have to use the 5-way joystick to scroll down the page and then over to the asterix, number, etc. and then click on it. You have hit the scroll button maybe 20 times to get to the link. I would like it if there was a shortcut key to skip directly from one footnote or link to the next. Maybe hold down alt and then up or down on the 5-way?

Why pay for blogs and newspapers when they could be the ultimate ad platform. Amazon could embed links to products, including physical products, that you could purchase by clicking on a context-sensitive ad. Since it’s linked to your Amazon account, it would be very quick and easy to enable such a purchase. To me, this is the holy grail of advertising. If people want to pay for an ad-free version, that should be an option as well. But my idea would bring more free content to everyone and more potential revenue for advertisers and Amazon.

Rentals would be a great addition. Rent a book for a fraction of the purchase price and you have X number of days to read it and then it is deleted from your system. With the DRM on the Kindle, this seems like it would be easy to implement. And since Device Kindle 2 purchases cannot be sold or shared with others, we are essentially in a leasing arrangement anyways. To say that you own the content on your Device Kindle 2 isn’t quite accurate. It would be nice to be offered a more explicit and cheaper rental arrangement. A Netflix type arrangement with a flat fee would be awesome. You could have the price depend on the number of books simultaneously allowed and new ones would instantly download from your queue as soon as you finish one.

Book sharing would be a very nice feature. Publishers obviously fear that file sharing sites could crop up if people were allowed to loan books without restrictions. But it would be possible to digitize what people have been doing for centuries. If you decide to loan a book to a friend, it would become inactive on your Device Kindle 2 until they “return” it to you. Thus, no copies are being made. If we truly own the content on our Device Kindle 2, then this should be allowed.

The included instruction manual is very dry and “corporate” sounding. It would be more enjoyable to read a manual written by a power user who shows off tips, tricks, shortcuts, etc. The letter from Jeff Bezos is quite the opposite, so maybe he should write the manual, too!

More shortcuts! Alt-S to bring up Search, Alt-W to search Wikipedia for a highlighted word… The screen re-draws on the Device Kindle 2 are fine for reading, but a bit slow for navigating menus. Power users hate spending 10-20 seconds going through menus when a shortcut would be possible.

All in all, Device Kindle 2 surpasses the printed book. This is a huge accomplishment! I would give printed books 3 of 5 stars. I think that says a lot about how much I like the Kindle. There are just a few areas where it could be improved and most of these could be implemented through software updates and changes to Amazon store policies. For me to give a 5, it has to be perfect, but this comes very close. A 95%.

Cool, but not yet perfect

Well, I Buy Kindle 2 all of three hours now, making me an expert This is an initial first-impressions review. This is the first Kindle I’ve ever seen or owned.

First, they might mention that the graphic on the front of the Kindle when you open the package is NOT an overlay, it’s the actual e-ink. I didn’t get that right away, and tried to peel the overlay off. Fortunately, I wasn’t successful

I got it up and running right away. Battery was about half charged, but the included power cable (con: proprietary connector) is plenty long enough if you have a plug near a chair. I was able to get it up and running in short order, and ordered books within 5 minutes of turning it on.

Suggestion for Amazon: I Buy Kindle 2 9 from amazon, I note a lot of complaints about the Kindle 2 not coming with books. You’d go a long way to making customers happier, if the Kindle included the ability to order one book for free. That would be better than getting some random bestseller list book for free, I’d rather choose my own book.

Being able to adjust the type size larger is useful. Unfortunately, I find the text on the keys nearly unreadable, so if I want to type something, I need glasses. I think even someone with good vision might have trouble with them. Also, since the keyboard is too small for touch-typing, I think it might have been better ordered abc rather than querty – but that could just be me. My fingers know where the keys on a querty keyboard are, but my eyes don’t, if that makes any sense. I need to be able to use all my fingers to touch-type properly.

Other than the keyboard annoyances, I found navigation easy and user friendly. The e-ink is very readable in normal light, not so much so in low light, so I’ll still need a reading light in planes and such. Cloudy today, so I have yet to try it in bright sunlight.

The size is good. A bit overlarge for me, but I have very small hands. I can still read comfortably, and the next page keys are comfortably placed. They seem to have fixed the problem that the original Kindle has with accidental page turning. The Next Page hinges on the outer edge, making it more difficult to press accidentally.

Web browser is very much still a beta project. I found it very annoying to try to use, so I’ll use it only when I can’t use my computer, or my IPod Touch, to surf the web. Useful for a quick peek at wikipedia or local weather, perhaps.

Right now my Kindle is turned off, and there’s a picture of Mark Twain on the ink. That’s pretty cool, that the ink stays even when it’s turned off. With the black and white photos, it really does look like a printed page, rather than a screen.

Oh, and (probably not surprisingly) the text-to-speech sounds a lot like Stephen Hawking’s “voice”. Perfectly understandable though. Not sure I’ll use this feature much, but nice to know it’s there.

Yea, this is mostly quibbles and complaints. So why four stars? Because aside from these mostly minor quibbles, I love the thing and agree with the praises everybody is heaping on it. I am an absolutely obsessive reader, so being able to carry multiple books around with me without the heft of tons of paperbacks, is a boon.

A note on books pricing. New books are usually around . Older books vary, but around . My unproven suspicion is that the price might drop when the paperback comes out. If that is the case, then buying books via the Kindle is cheaper than buying paper. I just like that I can now buy new books from my favorite authors without having to load down my already overburdened bookcases with hardcovers. I hate waiting for the paperback version! Now I no longer have to!

If you are a heavy reader, the hefty pricetag of the Kindle I think is well spent. Even if it doesn’t save me money, it’ll save me lots of room in the “library”

Kindle Amazon – Rediscovering the pleasure of reading

After many months wondering if purchasing a kindle was a good idea, I finally made the plunge and purchased one just before a 3-week long vacation. I hastily downloaded books that I had meant to read for awhile. First wonderful surprise was the choice of French novels in French that I downloaded for about a piece. I also purchased other books including “Hot, Flat and Crowded” that I had read before but wanted to read again and take notes for a class I am teaching on Environmental Ethics.

All books came within the advertized 60 seconds. The second surprise was to be able without any difficulty to read under full sun. I was also amazed by the long lasting battery which only required a reloading once a week during the 3 weeks despite intensive reading. Please note that I never left the battery go below 75% of its full capacity (I was not very confident that the battery was actually still almost full!) The recharging of the battery was seamless despite being in three different countries with different plug configurations, voltage,…

The size of the Kindle was perfect for the ever shrinking economy class airplane, but the light in the plane was not sufficient and I had to use another “Kindle Amazon” light I had also purchased. The ability to turn the wireless feature on and off was a wonderful “airplane advantage.” The note taking was very easy and very enjoyable to read through independently of the book itself.

I also ordered a book sample and could not wait to be back in the US to purchase the full copy. The wireless feature did not function in Europe. I was happy that I had purchased so many books before leaving.

The cover I purchased at the same time was not very good. The mechanism to hook up the Kindle Amazon is weak and faulted many times.

Ever since the original Kindle Amazon came out, I questioned why I would need one of these. I wasn’t a big reader (now I understand why) and I just couldn’t figure out how this could help me. My Favorite New Electronic Device

First off…wow!

I am astounded at how amazing the Amazon Kindle 2 Reading is. The Kindle 2 Reading has brought reading to the 21st century. Reading is something that I absolutely love, but I find it hard to wait several days for a book to be shipped to me or pay the outrageous prices at a bookstore. Once I have the book, especially if it is a large one, there is the issue of toting it around from place to place.

If I’m reading several books at once carrying them around is pain…well, in comes the Kindle and it has solved all these problems. If I hear of a book that is interesting, I can download a sample, if I like it I can have the book at my fingertips in 60 seconds. I am looking forward to build my library in my Kindle 2 Reading. I will have access to hundreds of books at once. Another plus is that I can read the newspaper again, not having to worry about running to the newsstand or paying a bill.

The Kindle 2 Reading is easy to carry around, I take it with me everywhere, hoping to sneak in a few pages of my current read or the daily paper. It has taken reading, something I love and made it 100 times more convenient and accessible.

The features of the Kindle 2 Reading are great. I can highlight, bookmark, and annotate just as I would in a regular book, if I want to know the meaning of a word, it is there. There are many other features I have not even began to explore and I am already satisfied with my investment.
